Caster Semenya: I'm Not Ashamed of Being Different

Caster Semenya is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion in the 800 meters. But she might be best known for her fight against the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), which has been trying to force her

Semenya to undergo hormone treatment in order to compete in her chosen event. In this interview with Victoria Derbyshire, Semenya opens up about her experience and why she's not going to be ashamed of who she is.

"I'm not going to be ashamed of being different," Semenya said. "I'm not going to be ashamed of who I am." Semenya has been at the center of a controversy over her naturally high levels of testosterone, which the IAAF has argued give her an unfair advantage over other female athletes. The IAAF has been trying to force Semenya to undergo hormone treatment in order to compete in her chosen event, the 800 meters, but Semenya has refused. "I'm not going to let them tell me who I am," Semenya said. "I'm not going to let them tell me what I can and can't do." Semenya's case has been widely seen as a test case for the rights of transgender athletes. If the IAAF is successful in forcing Semenya to undergo hormone treatment, it could set a precedent for other transgender athletes being forced to do the same.
