Justin Trudeau: Canada's Prime Minister Since 2015

The 2015 Canadian Federal Election

A Historic Victory for the Liberal Party and Justin Trudeau

In the 2015 Canadian federal election held on October 19, 2015, the Liberal Party led by Justin Trudeau secured a resounding victory, capturing 184 seats and forming a majority government. This marked a significant shift in Canadian politics, as the Liberals had been in opposition for nearly a decade.

Justin Trudeau, the son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, became the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada on November 4, 2015. His victory was attributed to a number of factors, including his youthful charisma, his commitment to progressive values, and his promise of change after years of Conservative rule.

The 2015 election results were almost identical in terms of seat distribution to the previous election in 2011. Justin Trudeau and the Liberals took 184 seats, or 54.4 percent of the 338 seats in the House of Commons, up from 180 seats in 2011. This increase in support allowed Trudeau to form a majority government, as the Liberals held more than half of the seats.

Trudeau's victory was also a significant personal triumph. He became the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history, after Joe Clark, and the first to be born after the country's official bilingualism policy was adopted in 1969. His election also marked the return of the Trudeau name to the prime minister's office, after his father's long tenure from 1968 to 1979 and 1980 to 1984.
