The Misfits, a legendary punk rock band, left an indelible mark on the music industry. And at the heart of their iconic sound was the distinctive guitar tone of Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein, the band's lead guitarist.
Doyles Annihilator: A Guitar with a Bite
Doyles signature guitar, the Annihilator, was a key component in crafting his unique tone. The guitar's body, made of Korina wood, provided a bright and resonant sound, while the EMG 81 pickup delivered a high-output, aggressive tone.
The Amplification Setup: A Precise Balance
To amplify his Annihilator, Doyle employed a meticulous amp setup that involved two amplifiers: a Marshall JCM800 and an Ampeg V-4.
- Marshall JCM800: This amplifier was set to a high-gain channel with the treble and bass controls boosted. This provided the foundation for Doyles heavy, distorted sound.
- Ampeg V-4: This amplifier was used as a "clean" boost, adding extra volume and clarity to Doyles tone without adding distortion.
